Acoustic Jazz...

Mark Holzinger and Simon Planting There are two different ensembles I perform with in this genre. The first is The Pitchfork Trio which consists of Bing Nathan (bass), Eric Shiffrin (piano), and myself on guitar. We explore a wide variety of twentieth century music and have a lot of fun doing it. The other is a Jazz Duo With Simon Planting (pictured at right), where we specialize in Django Reinhardt style "Gypsy Jazz" along with some Hot Club inspired originals and contemporary cover tunes. Both of these bands work with weddings and events as well as smaller, more intimate gatherings and they are spotlighted on my "Acoustic Jazz" page along with photos and music samples.

Mark Holzinger   I am based out of San Francisco, CA and have ongoing solo engagements with numerous venues including Hornblower Yachts, The Jupiter Lounge, and Italian Colors where I stroll through the restaurant with a remote wireless guitar system. Acoustic Duo With Pat Kelley...

Mark Holzinger and Pat Kelley   I gave Pat his first guitar lessons over thirty years ago and he´s still going strong! In addition to guitar, Pat plays the hammered dulcimer, a medieval Irish percussion stringed instrument that predates the piano. He has studied both classical and jazz guitar (under the grear Joe Pass), and performed throughout the Bay Area on both guitar and hammered dulcimer. Today, we perform for weddings and private parties throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, either as a hammered dulcimer-guitar duo or as a jazz guitar duo. I invite you to take a look at my Pat Kelley Duo page where you will find more information as well as some photos and mp3 samples of our music.

Wedding and Event Bands...

Weddings and events come in a wide viriety of "flavors", just like the bands that I am involved with. Regardless of what you may be looking for, there is a good chance that something that I do will be a perfect fit for your special occasion. While one of my bands, jazz guitar trio, The Groove Affair, is built specifically for events, there are other bands on this site that may be better suited for what you are trying to do. If you are interested in jazz trio with piano, guitar, and upright bass, then you might want to check out The Pitchfork Trio. Another excellent choice is my Jazz Duo with upright bassist, Simon Planting. You may also be interested in Acoustic Duo with Pat Kelley on hammered dulcimer, or Solo Guitar. For more on these bands, including music samples and photos, just click on the names above.

Spare Parts...

There are a number of things I do (or have done) that don't quite fit any of the categories listed above. For example, I appear with Ben Hunter and Celtic Scandal playing traditional Irish music and rock. I am one of the revolving cast of musicians that makes up the house band at the Gold Dust Lounge in Union Square. I am a bass player at the Gold Dust, doing mainly old rock tunes, but it's a lot of fun. At one time I was a Member of the North Beach All Stars where we specialized in Django Reinhardt style gypsy jazz. The NBAS is where I met Simon Planting. The All Stars haven't done anything as a band for a while but you never know...For several years I was the lead guitarist for the Johnny Smith Group up in Napa. I am on a number of cds by the Johnny Smith Group along with some "specialty" jazz cds with Johnny. I should be appearing as a guest musician with the Johnny Smith Group in the future so stay tuned!
In the "Gone But Not Forgotten" department, there's The Mud Dogs, a rockabilly group that had quite a following back in the eighties. Another eighties band that I'm particularly proud of is MadHouse. We were based out of Berkeley and we put out a cd which is still available. Last but not least, I played with the late Tubes and Grateful Dead keyboardist, Vince Welnick in Vince Welnick and Friends and Missing Man Formation during the late nineties.
